Well, the academy already shared it’s picks for the best projects and performances last year, but I want to take a moment to weigh in with a couple actors and performances that I really enjoyed over the last year.

Leonardo DiCaprio’s an actor that I’ve admired for a while, and his performance in The Revenant was no exception. It was great to see his talent come through in a movie that shows highlights and depends on the lead role to such an extreme degree. A lot of the scenes are just one man and a camera, and I think he pulled off it off really well. The story and direction were incredible, but without a great actor in that lead role the movie would have lost a lot of its impact. Furthermore, like a lot of people around the world, I’m just happy to see DiCaprio’s talent recognized after so many projects, finally receiving an Academy Award.

Alicia Vikander was another incredible performance. I’ve been following her closely since she appeared in A Royal Affair and I think her talent really blossomed with her performance in Ex-Machina. With The Danish Girl, her acting really hit a high, projecting a presence that’s both sublime and enchanting. As I walked out of the movie theater, I was confident that that was a performance not only of nomination, but of winning the Academy Award.

Lastly, Cate Blanchett is another actor who I’ve admired for many years- a beautiful woman and a truly amazing actress. As an actor, I feel there’s something to be learned from every second she’s on screen. Every time I watch her she’s able to take one on a real journey of feeling and sensations. There are a lot of great actors out there but it’s rare that someone can have that degree of effect on the viewer. Carol was yet another great example of that quality in an amazing career.

Overall, it was a great year for acting. I can’t wait to see some of the upcoming films this year!
